A curated ear stack

How to Plan Your Ear Curation by Anatomy

A curated ear is a set of piercings and jewelry planned to work together, rather than added one at a time. The best ones don't come from copying a photo. They come from looking closely at your ear and choosing placements and sizes that suit its shape.

Start with your anatomy

Every ear is different. The size of your lobe, the depth of your conch and the shape of your helix rim all decide which placements are possible and what will sit comfortably. A rook, daith or flat needs enough of a ridge or space to hold jewelry well. Some ears simply don't have it, and that is fine. Your piercer will check what your ear can support before anything else.

Think in zones

  • Lobes: the easiest place to start, and where you can stack two or three studs or hoops.
  • Upper cartilage: the helix, forward helix and flat frame the top of the ear.
  • Inner ear: the conch, tragus, daith and rook add depth in the middle.

A balanced ear usually has something in at least two zones, with space left between them so each piece can be seen.

Balance your sizes

  • Get smaller as you go up. Larger studs or hoops on the first lobe and smaller ones higher up look natural, because the ear narrows.
  • Mix studs and hoops. All studs can look busy, and all hoops can crowd each other. A mix gives the eye somewhere to rest.
  • Hoop diameter matters. A hoop should sit close to the edge of the ear. Too large and it sticks out, too small and it pinches. Our size guide lists the common sizes for each placement.
  • Keep one metal colour, or mix on purpose. Gold and silver together can look great when it is repeated across the ear, not when one piece is the odd one out.

Plan your healing, too

Cartilage piercings take 6–12 months to heal, so a full ear is usually built over a few visits. Getting many cartilage piercings at once means more areas you can't sleep on and more time spent healing. Your piercer can suggest an order that keeps things comfortable.

Fresh piercings start with longer posts to allow for swelling. Most are downsized to a shorter post once the swelling settles, and that is when your ear really starts to look curated.
